Stefanie and Janna from Behind the Blush have taken a few moments out of their busy schedule to chat with us about their business and love for the bridal beauty industry! The Behind the Blush team has been blending their hair and makeup artistry skills to bring bride’s beauty visions to life! Behind the Blush offers hair and make up services for weddings, engagement sessions, portrait sessions, boudoir photo sessions and concept photo shoots.
How did Behind the Blush come to be?
Our business started with a friendship! We have been friends for just over 10 years now. We met through mutual friends and lived together in a house with six girls during our early 20’s.
After finishing hair school, Stefanie began working with a very well-known photographer, mainly doing boudoir and styled shoots. Meanwhile, Janna was pursuing her love of makeup at MAC cosmetics. We had always freelanced weddings together with Janna doing mainly makeup and Stefanie focusing on hair. In May of 2013, we turned our friendship/partnership into a business and we started Behind The Blush. We have grown our team of two to four! Caitlyn has joined our team as a hairstylist and Diane has joined us as a makeup artist!
Where is your favourite place that you have traveled to for your job?
This year has been our busiest travel year yet! Each year we book an amazing destination wedding or photo session. This year's top pick would have to be the Italy elopement in Positano, Italy. (link to: https://www.behindtheblush.ca/positano-italy-elopement/) Another favorite event we look back at with fond memories was an elopement in Iceland.
Is there a bride or couple that has been especially memorable? What made them so memorable?
All of our couples are special to us for so many different reasons. The brides that stand out are the ones that become friends, the people who you keep in touch with and follow along with their journey in life. Starting with doing their hair and makeup for boudoir and engagement photos, then their wedding day, eventually maternity photo sessions, and even later down the line, family photos!
What is your favourite hairstyle/makeup look for brides?
We love when our brides ask us to enhance their natural beauty and they aren’t trying to look like a celebrity or model. A bride’s wedding day hair and makeup look should enhance her own beauty and not have her looking like a totally different person. At their hair and makeup trial, we try to create a look unique to each bride and help her achieve the vision she has for her big day.
How does "the dress" influence the bride's hair and makeup on her wedding day?
We typically ask to see a photo of the bride in her dress or a photo of the dress so that we can see how the makeup and hair can enhance her bridal look. The dress sets the stage for the overall feel. Even a veil or certain hair accessory plays a role in transforming the bridal look. When choosing a hair and makeup look to go with the wedding dress, it mostly has to do with her choice of hairstyle. For the hairstyle, it’s more so about choosing to enhance something like a low back by wearing the hair all up or off to the side, so even the smallest detail of the dress doesn’t go unnoticed.
Are there any fall bridal looks that you especially love right now?
We have found that romantic soft updos are perfect for Fall/Winter weddings because of our unpredictable weather and this style typically lasts longer. For makeup we see more brides wanting a darker burgundy or red lip and glam makeup.
Are there any hair and makeup styles that you foresee becoming popular trends in the near future?
From bridal runway shows, we saw a relaxed take on hair and makeup with veils and hair accessories really having a moment in the limelight. One of our favourite things about our jobs is that trends are always changing and we get to explore them with our clients. No season is ever the same. We also love getting to try different looks that may not be an everyday bridal look through styled shoots.
